“Learning by doing”
is carried out, in one way, by the frequent trips we take.
The children take trips during the year to cultural events, post
office, market, airport, zoo, fire station,
library,churches, art museums, the Parliament house.
Trips are a rich resource for:
- starting a child’s imaginary play
- understanding their world through a real experience
- learning vocabulary, English and Finnish.
Discovery Curriculum Highlights: in
English and Math
AGE 3 and 4- Begin to recognize the ABC’s , and numbers 1-10.
Begin pre-writing, their names.
AGE 4 and 5- Continue the ABC’s, and begin letter sounds.
Math-Begin concepts of
patterning, comparisons, measuring, sorting and classifying.
AGE 5 and 6- Begin to achieve language fluency. Know letter sounds,
begin reading.
Math- the idea of addition and
subtraction.
Our primary emphasis is on English oral
language development:
talking, singing, stories, drama, expressing and sharing all day long.
Children at age 3 and 4 are at the
perfect developmental stage for learning English as a second
language. There are natural mimics who listen and repeat what
they hear; they look at and imitate their caregiver language.
During your visit, we will be happy to explain how
young children learn English in our program.
The purpose of the preschool is:
to prepare children for primary school,
by helping them to become
- confident
- independent
- eager learners
- familiar with beginning academic skills
in 2 languages: English and Finnish.

Note: Even
though we do not teach reading as a subject, most of the 6 and 7 year
olds are reading and writing in English and Finnish before they leave
the Garden City Playschool for first grade.
Childrensīs Accomplishments are
assessed and
explained to parents twice per year in a private parent-teacher
meeting. The report covers all areas of development for the young child.
